Swim & Boat Tests

Swim Requirement
MIT Undergraduate students are required to meet a swim requirement by taking a swim class or passing the swim test before they can graduate. The swim test consists of jumping into the pool and swimming 100 yards continuously.

Boating Test
The boating test is required by the sailing pavilion and boathouse in order to use sailboats or crew shells. The boat test consists of jumping in the water, swimming 100 yards continuously and then treading water for 10 minutes.

Drop in test times
Patrons can come to the Zesiger Center Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the times listed below to take either or both tests. A valid MIT ID or photo id with facility day pass is required before patrons can take the test.

Academic Year: 8:00am or 8:00pm
Winter Break: 8:00am or 8:00pm
Summer: 8:00am or 8:00pm

Tests by appointment
If you cannot make the times listed above, please contact the aquatic office at 617-324-2200 or email wcall@mit.edu to schedule an appointment.

Special Needs
If you have a special need in regard to the swim or boat test, please contact the aquatics staff at aqua@mit.edu.
