We will be hosting our Fourth Annual Head of the Zesiger Cardboard Boat Regatta. You may remember seeing the coverage on Fox 25 News in the past. It's time to make a boat! All DAPER members may compete.

* Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Registration will be capped at 15 teams. Teams that cancel on or before 6p on October 9 will receive their full $10 deposit back. Teams that cancel after October 9 or are a no show, forfeit their deposit.

Construction Regulations
  • Boat dimensions: must be no longer than 3 meters and no wider than 1.5 meters. Crew must be visible, not enclosed. Sides cannot rise above crews’ shoulders.
  • Any thickness of corrugated cardboard is permitted, but waxed cardboard carpet tubes and barrels are not allowed.
  • Only paper tape may be used. Tape may only be used on seams, joints or patches. DO NOT WRAP THE HULL IN TAPE, PLASTIC, SHRINK WRAP OR ANY OTHER MATERIAL.
  • Applied paint must be allowed to dry for at least 48 hours prior to bringing the boat to the Zesiger Center. A one-part enamel or lacquer paint and/or polyurethane varnish or water sealant is permitted. Do not use tar-based substances, epoxy glue, duct tape, cellular, plastic, wood, fiberglass resin or any two-part substances, including two-part varnishes and paint. Styrofoam or any other flotation-type foam is not allowed. Violators will be stripped of any trophies.
  • Caulking may be used, but only on seams and edges.
  • There is no limit to the amount of individuals that help construct the boat
  • No restriction is placed on decorative materials, as long as they do not aid in the flotation or propulsion of the boat and do not create a fire or safety hazard.  Decorative materials must be in good taste and not offensive to any groups within the MIT Community.
  • All boats must display their crew name. The name must be at least 6-inches tall.
Race Rules
  • Oct 14th there will be an email sent out to the captains with more specific details and reminders about the event.
  • Teams may drop off their boats as early as 9am on October 16th at the Zesiger Pool Deck, please check in with the deck manager upon arrival.  
  • Each boat must have a designated Captain plus 2 crew members for a total of 3 participants per boat. The Captain must check in at the registration area on the day of the race located on the Zesiger Center pool deck.
  • Any boat and/or crew not ready to race at the designated time will be disqualified.
  • To qualify as a finalist, participants must correctly navigate the race course (down 50 meters, around the buoy and back) while having all crew members in the boat during the entire race.
  • Each boat must pass technical inspection following the time trials.
  • Top 3 overall time trial finishers will earn a spot in the finals.
  • Time trials will be held in the main pool. If no boat finishes in the finals, winners will be based on time trial results.
  • Participants must retrieve their boat — or its remains — from the water.
  • A participant may not compete in more than one crew.
  • Each team will be provided 3 kickboards to be used as paddles. No other method of propulsion will be allowed
  • Foul play or non-sportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated and will result in immediate disqualification.
