Internal Departmental Pool Use Request Procedures

MIT Recreational Sports is dedicated to encouraging scientific research and testing in the aquatic environment. We will review all requests for pool time and will determine whether each request fits in the small research project or large research project category listed below.

Small Research Projects (non-electrical, non-mechanical, no more than 1 lane)

In order to Reserve Pool Space:

• Pool use request must be submitted 1 week in advance and will be kept to low use times which will be determined by the Assistant Aquatics Director at the time of reservation.

• The research project will only be able to use 1 lane, if more space is needed an official rental will be needed, and a rental fee will be incurred.
• All participants must be affiliated with MIT.
• Group that will have individuals in the water with their equipment will require two lifeguards to be on duty during the rental period.
• The deck manager on duty has the right to stop or terminate the scheduled research if he or she deems it dangerous or does not meet the small research description.

Large Research Projects (electrical, mechanical, ROV's, or require more than 1 lane)

In order to Reserve Pool Space:

• Research will be conducted on weekdays between 9:30-11AM throughout the year.

Reminders For All Research Projects:

• Group must arrive all at once to be escorted into the facility.
• All pool rules and regulations must be adhered to.
• Cancellations of any pool use need to be e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. at least 48 hours prior to date of reservation will incur no charge.
• No Shows or cancelations within 48 of the reservation date, will incur full pool rental charges and staffing charges as stated in the original confirmation.
• Request for payment for use will be done at the conclusion of the use via a JV transfer; a final invoice will be e-mailed to primary contact for informational purposes only.
• If any facility damage is caused by the research reservation, the facility repair cost will need to be paid within 60 days and it will be listed on the final invoice.
• No glass (including clear plexi-glass) or harmful materials will be allowed.
• Tinted or colored plexi-glass will be allowed.
