Membership Categories and Definitions

MIT Student

All MIT undergraduate/graduate students who have paid tuition and student life activity fees for the current academic year; August 16 - June 14; or summer students who have paid the summer student fee for membership between June 15 and August 15. Must obtain a valid I.D. at the MIT card office.

Wellesley Student

Wellesley College undergraduate students who have paid tuition for the current semester and have a valid student ID obtained at the MIT card office.

Cross-Registered Student

Any student from another college simultaneously registered for class(es) at MIT for the current semester. Must obtain a valid I.D at the MIT card office.

MIT Faculty/Staff

A current MIT employee with verifying identification, including Whitehead Institute and Lincoln Laboratory staff.

MIT Faculty/Staff Bike Commuter Membership

This membership is tailored to the bicycling community to provide facility access for a workout routine and shower before work. Membership is limited to the hours of 6:00 am - 9:00 am, Monday–Friday.  Follow this link for more information on how to enroll in the MIT Bicycle Commuter Benefit Program. Patrons may park their bicycles at the racks provided near the entrances to the DAPER facilities or in the West Garage secured bicycle cage. Don't forget to secure your bikes and belonging while using the facilities.

MIT Alumnus/ae

Any MIT graduate. Must obtain an MIT Alumni card at the MIT Card Office.

MIT Affiliate

An "Affiliate" is defined as a member of the MIT Community who is not a regular employee, student, alumni, or spouse/partner of an MIT Community member. Examples include contractors, vendors, and next source employees.

Friends of MIT

Any adult, 18 years-of-age or older, who does not have current MIT affiliation through other membership categories, and is sponsored by an MIT community member.

Retirees of MIT

Any adult retired from MIT with 10 years of service and is receiving benefits is eligible for Faculty/Staff membership rate. Must have valid retiree I.D. obtained at the MIT Card Office.

Family Member

Any individual who is a spouse/partner of the MIT affiliate and dependents under 18 years of age or under the age of 23 with a valid student ID.  The parent/guardian must supervise minor family members in the same activity area during youth access hours. Please see page 18 for youth policies. A spouse/partner must provide proof of the same residence as the primary member (a valid driver’s license/lease with both names). Spouses/partners of MIT faculty or staff and students must go to the MIT card office to obtain their spousal cards.

Temporary Pass Categories and Definitions

Student – Any student with a valid student ID issued from U.S. School.

Affiliate vs. Non-Affiliate – For temporary passes, an "MIT Affiliate" is defined as an MIT Student, MIT Faculty/Staff, Alumnus/a, spouse of one of the preceding, and Wellesley Student or Cross-Registered Student.

MIT Card Office – You will find the MIT Card office in the basement of the Stratton Center (W20-021). The office is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
