Adult Instructional Classes

Classes are available for registration beginning at 6:00am on December 12th, 2011

Registration can be done online or by stopping by the Main Member Services Desk at either the Zesiger Center or the Alumni Wang Fitness Center.  Please Note: Registration for all Adult Classes will close one week after the course start date. No additional registrations will be accepted. Member and non-member rates are available and non-member rates include access to the facility for class times. Check the detailed class information for pool location (Zesiger or Alumni) and meeting dates, times and skip days if applicable.

Pre-Natal Swim Register Now
This course supports women interested in participating in regular low-intensity exercise during their pregnancy.  The class will provide a comfortable social and low impact environment for the mother-to-be.  Water resistance will be used for arm and leg movements in chest-deep water and deep water.  Medical authorization from your physician will be required to participate.  See health form below.

Adult Introduction to Swimming Basics Register Now
This course is designed for the true beginner.  Instructors along with small class sizes (max 5) will provide support, guidance, and patience to help you truly enjoy the water. The focus will be on floating, treading, changing body position and comfort in and around the water.  We will work on how to move safely through the water, submerging underwater, and moving from a horizontal float o a standing position. Prerequisite: Willing to stand in 4 feet of water and get face wet. Minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 participants.

Adult Beginning Swim Register Now
This course offers instruction in basic swimming skills for beginners. Learn  or improve your crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke.  Prerequisite: Needs to be comfortable getting face wet, floating on front and being in shallow water. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 participants.

*NEW! Women’s Only Beginning Swim Register Now
This class will run during the women's only rec swim on Tuesday nights throughout the spring season. This course offers instruction in basic swimming skills for beginners.  Learn or improve on your crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke.
Pre-requisite: Comfortable getting face wet, floating on front and being in shallow water..

Adult Intermediate Swim Register Now
Do you understand swimming basics but need help putting it all together? Improve your front crawl, back crawl and learn breathing techniques, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Prerequisite: Comfortable with front and swimming on your back. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 participants.

Adult Stroke Technique Register Now
This program is designed for the more advanced adult swimmer who wants to learn the fundamentals of lap swimming and improve their stroke technique. Prerequisite: Students should know the front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke prior to taking this class, and be able to swim 100 yards continuously.  Minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 participants.

Efficient Freestyle Register Now
This course will break down the coordination, flexibility, timing, and power of the freestyle stroke to help swimmers learn good form and increase overall efficiency. Drills that teach proper posture, line, and balance will be used to create the desired fluid motion when moving through the water. Prerequisite: Needs to be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle continuously. Minimum of 6 and a maximum of 10 participants.

Pre-Masters: An Introduction to Swim Workouts Register Now
This program is designed for the adult swimmer who wants to gain swimming endurance. This program will help prepare swimmers for either a Masters Swim Program or for the use of lap swimming as a form of aerobic exercise. Prerequisite: Students should know the front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke prior to taking this class and be able to swim 500 yards continuously. Minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 participants.

Open Water Swimming (Zesiger Center 50m Pool) Register Now
This course will increase your comfort when swimming for extended periods of time in open water, and it is geared towards individuals who are training for a triathlon or an open water swim race. You can expect to improve efficiency and build endurance while also learning strategies specific to racing. The class will be taught in a 25 yards pool and buoys will be used to work on turns. Prerequisite: Needs to be able to swim 500 yards of freestyle continuously.

Adult Navy SEAL Swim Training (Zesiger 50 Meter Pool)  Register Now
This course is challenging, fun and guaranteed to bring your swimming to a new level, whether you are a recreational swimmer or preparing for the Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test (PST).  The workout consists of drills and swim sets that will progressively develop the swimmers' mastery of combat side stroke, body dolphin and freestyle.  Each workout will end with a short dry-land training session on the deck (sit-ups, pushups, stretching). Pre-Requisite: Basic swimming competency, i.e., swim 100 yards in deep water....


NEW! Strength and Conditioning for Swimming Register Now
This course offers a new way to heighten your swimming abilities—outside of the water. Meeting once a week, this class will focus all exercises primarily on the muscles used for swimming. Students will gather the knowledge to perform carefully structured, low intensity workouts that will consist of core strength development of the upper body and legs, as well as learning how to prevent injury of the shoulders and back.

MIT Underwater Hockey

Underwater Hockey is an exciting and addictive game played at the bottom of a pool with a short stick and a lead puck. No experience or equipment is required (except a bathing suit).
