Swimming Together: Highlights From Our Sensory Swim

By Abby Brady

Aquatic Coordinator

On Sunday, June 14, MIT Recreation Aquatics proudly hosted its first Sensory Swim event at the Zesiger Center Teaching Pool. The event welcomed 13 families from the neurodivergent community for a morning of inclusive aquatic fun, learning, and connection.

Sensory Swim was created to provide a low-stimulation, supportive aquatic environment where participants could explore the water at their own pace while building comfort, confidence, and water safety skills. Throughout the event, families had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of pool zones, including Open Swim, Water Safety Education, Sensory Play, and a Quiet Zone designed for relaxation and reduced stimulation.

In addition to the pool activities, participants enjoyed several on-deck activities, including swim safety coloring pages, pool noodle boat building, a water table, and stories from our aquatic library. These activities provided additional opportunities for engagement both in and out of the water.

At one point during the event, approximately 27 participants were enjoying the pool together. Families shared positive feedback about the welcoming environment, supportive staff, and opportunity to participate in aquatic recreation in a space designed with their needs in mind.

This event would not have been possible without the dedication of our lifeguards, swim instructors, staff, volunteers, and participating families. Their enthusiasm and support helped create a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

MIT Recreation Aquatics is excited about the success of this inaugural event and looks forward to exploring future opportunities to offer Sensory Swim programming. We remain committed to expanding access to aquatics and creating welcoming recreational experiences for all members of our community.\
